Best Dock Materials for Brackish Water in Virginia

Building a dock in Virginia's tidal rivers and bays is different from freshwater — and very different from saltwater. The Chesapeake Bay system is brackish: a mix of salt and fresh water that varies by location and season. This creates specific material challenges.

The Enemy: Marine Borers

The biggest threat to wooden dock pilings in brackish water isn't rot — it's marine borers (shipworms and gribbles). These organisms bore into untreated wood and can destroy a piling in 3-5 years.

In the Chesapeake Bay system, borer pressure varies by salinity. The lower Bay and major river mouths have higher borer pressure than upper tributaries.

Piling Options

Southern Yellow Pine with CCA treatment (standard) CCA treated to .60 pcf (pounds per cubic foot) retention for brackish applications. Expected life: 20-30 years under normal conditions.

Fiberglass composite pilings Immune to borers entirely. Higher upfront cost, excellent long-term performance. We use these more frequently in high-salinity areas near the Bay.

Greenheart or Ekki (hardwood) Dense tropical hardwoods naturally resist marine borers. Can last 40+ years. Often specified for commercial or high-borer-pressure sites.

Decking Options

Pressure-treated lumber Cost-effective and widely available. Expect 15-20 years before replacement. Requires periodic sealing.

Composite decking (Trex, TimberTech) No maintenance, won't rot or splinter, 25-year warranties. Costs 2-3x more upfront but often lower life-cycle cost. We recommend composite for any dock you plan to keep 15+ years.

Tropical hardwood (IPE, Cumaru) Dense, beautiful, extremely durable. Requires annual oiling. Premium pricing.

Our Recommendation for Most Northern Neck Projects

  • Pilings: CCA-treated SYP at .60 pcf, or fiberglass composite in higher-salinity areas
  • Framing: CCA-treated SYP at .40 pcf
  • Decking: Composite if budget allows, pressure-treated if not
